Temple Time

-

The Balinese are extremely tolerant and hospitable; their culture is rich, complex and intact, and while you’ll be most welcome to visit temples or ceremonies, imagine how you’d feel with hundreds of rank, shortwearing, sweaty, badly-coiffed visitors standing outside your place of worship, picking their pants out of their cracks, cameras in hand... If you simply can’t live another day without visiting a temple, read up on etiquette to avoid offence, wear a sarong and sash, and avoid Besakih and Tanah Lot, which are absolutely overrun. In east Bali, try the lesser visited but lovely Pura Lempuyung or Pura Pasar Agung (375 steps up with ravishing views at sunrise). In west Bali, visit Pura Luhur Batukau.
