Enchanting Riva

Maxx-M - - FOOD REVIEW - Text by Timotius | Photos courtesy of The Park Lane, Jakarta

One of the best things about the centrally located Park Lane Hotel in Jakarta is their secret weapon – Riva Grill Bar & Terrace. This gorgeous restaurant lets you escape the bother of Jakarta for a moment and hide away in this culinary paradise. Riva Grill Bar & Terrace is located on the first floor of the Park Lane. It consists of a lounge, bar, dining room and outdoor dining space. Riva Grill Bar & Terrace actually has two outdoor areas, one of them facing the street outside, Jalan Casablanca, and the other beside the hotel’s swimming pool. If you are looking for a bit of calm and serenity, ask for a seat near the pool. The first time I entered Riva, I was astonished by their collection of wines in the front room. Some of the wines were set up on a table, along with glasses. It is eye-catching and mouth-watering. Riva has opted for a semi-open kitchen (it’s not really open but diners can follow all the action through the large windows). It is always a pleasure watching the pros in action, as meal goes from pot and pan to plate and then to table, all under your watchful eye. It is a real pleasure. After a little tour of the restaurant, I was seated near the swimming pool and handed a menu, which I immediately pored over. Riva’s menu is divided into From the Sea, From the Farm, From the Garden, and From the Grill & Wood Oven. I started with the Green Spinach Salad, Thai Green Mango Salad and Javanese Oxtail Consommé. The Green Spinach Salad and Thai Green Mango Salad were From the Garden and the Oxtail Consommé was From the Farm. The Javanese Oxtail Consommé really captured my attention. The oxtail was served along with minced potatoes and carrots, and the waiter then poured the soup from a glass teapot. I finished the appetizers and almost immediately the main course arrived at the table. I had the Braised Lamb Australian Foreshank, Sautéed Salty Prawns, Pan-Fried Barramundi and LowOven Baked Asian Soy Chicken. My favourite was the Sautéed Salty Prawns. I loved its spicy and salty taste, along with the crispiness of the dish. The Pan-Fried Barramundi was also a hit, the yellow root sauce giving the dish a wonderful flavour. I also managed to save space for dessert, the Chocolate Ginger Mousse with Strawberry Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream. It was the perfect ending to a very good meal. Riva Grill Bar & Terrace is the whole package. You can relax over a delicious meal, away from the hectic pace of the city. And don’t forget that Riva Grill Bar & Terrace has a lounge and bar if you are not quite ready to face the city after your meal. Have an unforgettable dining experience!
