The best architects and designers – the ones who design buildings, structures and products that really matter – tend to provoke extreme reactions from both experts and the public. They are geniuses, or they are idiots. There is no middle ground. This happens because, like all great artists, the top designers challenge convention and push the envelope. They don’t do safe, straightforward work. Why would they? What they do design often offends or even enrages people. And this is good news for all of us who want to live in a world that does not bore us to death.
Zaha hadid, the first woman to win the coveted Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 2004, is an extraordinarily gifted designer who certainly polarises opinion. I am thrilled to say that we were able to secure an exclusive interview with her for this annual special issue of Indonesia’s leading high-society and lifestyle magazine. We also profile bernard Tschumi, architect of Vacheron Constantin’s stunning new headquarters.
