Proud to play
The Indonesian football team, fondly known as Timnas, is looking forward to a successful 2015. one of the key players in the side is its cultured midfielder, Raphael Maitimo. “This year I’m a full member of Timnas, and, with Timnas, I’m always proud to play,” smiles the adidas-sponsored footballer. “Last season we had a Brazilian coach (Jacksen F. Tiago), and this year we have alfred Riedl from austria, so that’s different. I can personally work with any coach, but it’s his job to create the right vibe and atmosphere for everyone. That’s the hardest thing for a football manager to do.”
Prestige’s favourite sportsman is a dutchborn naturalised Indonesian who spent his whole youth career at the famous Feyenoord academy in his hometown of Rotterdam, netherlands. Maitimo holds a Bachelor’s degree in economics of Commerce, with sports Marketing & Management as his minor.
his club side is Mitra Kukar, an Indonesia super League team based in Tenggarong, east Kalimantan. “With my club, I had a pretty tough season last year,” Maitimo confesses. “When I first joined Mitra Kukar, I entered in the second part of the season, and we reached our target to finish third in the league table. Last year was a bit tougher because, for me, all the travelling I had to do was draining. I felt it in my body for sure. My performances were consistent, but I know I could have done better overall.”
nonetheless, Maitimo continues to put his best foot forward. “For Timnas, I have played 18 matches and scored three goals,” he says. “With Mitra Kukar last season, I scored six goals. In a pre-season game against Persik Kediri from surabaya, I scored a hat trick – not bad for a defensive midfielder!”
