THE MACALLAN DOUBLE CASK 12 YEARS OLD

A union of two styles

in the heart of Speyside, The Macallan has built a reputation as one of the world’s finest single malt whiskies. The story of The Macallan is built on the Six Pillars, each influencing the whisky in its own distinct way.

Wood sits at the heart of The Macallan. “Our meticulous approach to wood demonstrates the central role it plays in every step of the whisky making journey. This is because wood influences over 80 percent of the final character and flavour of The Macallan,” says the Master of Wood Stuart MacPherson.

The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old is the latest addition to the brand’s 12 Years Old single malt collection. The others are The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Years Old and The Macallan Fine Oak 12 Years Old. The brand combines the best of two worlds in creating Double Cask. It has a balance of sherry seasoned European and American oak cask maturation. The result is sweet, honeyed and rounded, with a distinctive American oak style.

The creation of Double Cask starts when American oak travels to Spain, where it is seasoned with Oloroso Sherry alongside its European cousin for 18 months. The casks are then transported to Scotland, where they are filled with new make spirit. Once it has matured, Master Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno “marries” the two casks.

Double Cask’s aroma is a mix of butterscotch, toffee apple, candied orange, vanilla custard and newly felled oak. As for the palate, it has wood spices (ginger and nutmeg), citrus, caramel, raisins and resinous. It gives linger, warm, sweet and drying taste for the finish. Double Cask best serves over a crystal clear ice ball. The ice ball will slowly melt and release the aromas within the whisky.

“This single malt celebrates the union of two styles to create a fully rounded and distinctive flavour. By combining wood influences, we have been able to produce a new Macallan that sits perfectly between our existing Sherry Oak and Fine Oak ranges,” says Dalgarno.

The Macallan Double Cask and Fine Oak is now available at spirits shops, whisky bars and lounges around Jakarta.
