LUDWIG MEIDNER, APOCALYPTIC LANDSCAPE — RECTO, AND YOUNG MAN WITH STRAW HAT) — VERSO, 1912
November 12
Making an appearance at the Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale by Sotheby’s New York is this dual-faced oil on canvas by the German expressionist, estimated to fetch in excess of US$12 million. The Recto (front) depicts a blazing catastrophe where two people flee a shaken landscape, and is juxtaposed with the Verso (back), a significantly calmer portrayal of a young man in a straw hat, sitting languidly with a book and a pipe.
