Sensation of the Art World
The Kebon Jeruk-based Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum MACAN), the first institution of its kind in Indonesia, has become the sensation of the art world here, as became clear when some 500 guests and art enthusiasts gathered at the world-class gallery on Friday, November 16 for the opening of three important exhibitions by renowned conceptual artists from Asia: Indonesia’s Arahmaiani (“The Past Has Not Passed”), the Taiwanese-American artist Lee Mingwei (“Seven Stories”) and the late Japanese artist On Kawara (“One Million Years”). Japanese Ambassador Masafumi Ishii, Italian Ambassador Vittorio Sadari and Peter Lan, Deputy Representative of the Taipei Economic and
Trade Office, were the guests of honour. Haryanto Adikoesoemo, founder of Museum MACAN Foundation, Fenessa Adikoesoemo, Chairwoman of the foundation, and Aaron Seeto, Director of Museum MACAN, welcomed the guests. Museum MACAN’s collection focuses on modern and contemporary art from Indonesia, Europe, America and Asia. Drawn from the private collection of the founder and on longterm loan to the museum, the collection has been developed over more than 25 years and is actively growing. It comprises prominent artworks from Indonesia, Europe, North America, China and other parts of Asia. Prestige was the Media Partner for the event. The three exhibitions continue until March 10.
