MEMORIES OF HONG KONG

The 27-storey St. Regis Hong Kong is a glittering presence on the Hong Kong waterfront. Thanks to the creativity of André Fu, visitors enjoy an immersive, layered visual journey where personal memories are interweaved with the city’s heritage

“Iwanted to go deeper than the stereotypical concept of lanterns, junks and temples and tap into my own memories of the city,” says renowned interior designer André Fu of his stunning work on the 27-storey St. Regis Hong Kong, a glittering, graphic new presence in Wan Chai on the city’s famous waterfront.

Fu’s initial inspiration was actually old New York City: the first St. Regis hotel, which was built in 1904. Then he cleverly combined that look with elements from the Wan Chai district’s past: traditional pawnshops, the old police station and the Bauhaus-style market.

The result is a “curated mansion” that brings together architectural creativity, cultural diversity and timeless elegance. Visitors enjoy an immersive, layered visual journey where personal memories are interweaved with the city’s heritage. There are many Hong Kong references throughout the hotel, including old gas street lamps from Duddell Street, colonial columns from the Wan Chai police station and paneling inspired by colonial mansions.

Arriving at the hotel gives a sense of walking into a private Manhattan mansion from the turn of the century. Fu has successfully fused together the scale and grandeur of New York City with historic Hong Kong. The 580 sqm porte cochere sets the scene for a dramatic arrival, while the stone clad 8m walls work in harmony with the marble reception desk. An almost 8m high waterfall cascading in stone is featured not only for its rippling sound but also for the fluidity it introduces to the floor plan, while the opulent lanterns and sconces create a soft and sensual glow inside the lobby.

Situated on the second floor is the main public area of the hotel known as The Great Room, which extends to The Drawing Room, the Astor Terrace and the adjoining St. Regis Bar. From the low ceiling lift lobby to the 8m high ceiling of The Great Room draws a dramatic transition. Soaring ceilings and expansive windows filled the rooms with light, while the palette of cool greys and sage greens add the sense of luxury and openness. There’s a hanging chandelier, called The Skyline, has been designed by the architect himself and created by glass specialist Lasvit exclusively for the space.

The St. Regis Hong Kong has 129 rooms, including 14 deluxe suites, two Governor’s Suites and a Presidential Suite. All of these are staffed by personal butlers and many boast panoramic views of the city and harbour. The intimate size of the hotel provides the perfect setting to offer personalised services with St. Regis Butler Service. The bedroom interiors blend classic and modernity, with cultural influences that, to Fu, represent Hong Kong. Chalky white, warm mineral grey and taupe adorn the room while beds are dressed in white linen along with mauve cashmere throws, rugs and wall hangings to give a sense of comfort. In some, the hotel introduces a wake-up call with vivid orange lacquered doors.

The St. Regis Hong Kong features carefully curated art and works including paintings and sculptures by talented international artists throughout the hotel. One of them is a hand painted mural by Beijing artist Zhang Gong that becomes the centerpiece of St. Regis Bar. Gong took inspiration from a similar mural by Maxwell Parrish in the St. Regis New York that depicts many of the country’s most famous history features. Gong communicates the strong narrative of Hong Kong’s past and present, expressed with a selected colour palette and special painting techniques. It is also a blend of Chinese and Western cultures presented in a lively way.

The hotel features one-Michelin-starred L’Envol French restaurant helmed by Chef Olivier Elzer and one-Michelin-starred Rùn Chinese restaurant led by Chef Hung ChiKwong, while The Drawing Room hosts a redefined Afternoon Tea experience and offers an all-day international dining with live jazz music in the evening, and The St. Regis Bar signature cocktails are inspired by the tales of two cities: Hong Kong and New York.

The St. Regis Hong Kong combines elements of time and place that reinforce and elevate the spirit of the brand, while aspiring to set a new benchmark for the next generation of luxury hotels and resorts.
