EDITOR’S LETTER
We are living in unparalleled, mind-boggling times. Few alive today have ever experienced such draconian measures as those being taken to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. From political leaders to business owners and professionals, we must all respond to difficult and even alarming circumstances.
At Prestige and the DestinAsian Media Group as a whole, my valued colleagues and I have decided to fight on. This is a double issue of Prestige (April-May 2020) and the next few after this may turn out to be a bit thinner than usual. But no matter what it takes, and as long as we continue to have the support of loyal readers and advertisers, we will never give up on our publishing mission.
Inside, we take a look at two worlds I particularly enjoy: art and design. Our cover girl, my good friend Gaby Bakrie, tells us what it’s like to be a patron of Museum MACAN in Kebon Jeruk, the first museum in the archipelago to have a collection of modern and contemporary Indonesian and international art.
The Los Angeles-based The Haas Brothers have taken the art world by storm in the past few years with sculptural works and a fun aesthetic that blur the lines between art and design. Twins Simon and Nikolai give us an exclusive interview about their creative inspirations and a home collection of lovable monsters they have created for L’Objet.
Also among our exclusive interviewees this month are Giancarlo Bosio, Creative Director of Giorgetti, and Poliform designer Emmanuel Gallina. “Design,” says Bosio, “is the expression of society. Sometimes it influences it and prepares its future.” Meanwhile, Gallina tells us that he avoids trends to concentrate on making comfortable spaces. “People nowadays need things that make sense, that give them warmness and wellbeing,” he declares.
Here in Indonesia, we meet up with Domisilium Studio founders Santi Alaysius and Hamphrey Tedja. “Clients here are becoming bolder. Some of them are asking us to do something fresh and more playful, for them. We’re glad they’re giving us the space to be more explorative and creative with interior design,” they say.
