BE MY GUEST
When Jean Paul Gaultier announced that his spring/ summer 2020 haute couture show would be his last, he said his line would “continue with a new concept”. Now we know what that is. Gaultier is handing over the reins to a series of guest designers. The first is Chitose Abe, Creative Director of Sacai, a label she founded in 1999. On Twitter, Gaultier said: “I have the pleasure to announce the new concept for my Haute Couture. Each season, I will invite a designer to interpret the code of the House and I am doubly pleased that Chitose Abe of Sacai will be the first one!” He told WWD: “I admire her work. We have many things in common creatively and a similar vision of fashion. I am glad to give her complete freedom.” For her part, Abe said in British Vogue: “I have a long-held admiration for Jean Paul’s unique vision of subversive femininity and his originality, both of which I’ve strived towards in my work since the beginning.” Abe will design the fall/winter 2020 couture collection for Gaultier. After that, the fashion world will look forward to finding out who next he invites into his atelier.
