THE DISCO GLAM REVIVAL
For his sophomore ready-to-wear show at FENDI, Kim Jones explores the joyful irreverence that has historically defined the house, alongside the empowered ease of his vision for its future. The collection is a modern perspective on disco-age glamour and shines a spotlight on diverse and powerful femininity. Kim Jones dived into FENDI’s archives and dug up illustrations drafted by fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez during his period of collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld, which then became the starting point of a collection that draws upon the artist’s sensibility and Studio 54 surroundings. Now Lopez’s work has been freshly revived. His brushstrokes appear in elegant abstraction across cream kaftans and silken shirting, while his figurative drawings are translated into intarsia leathers, intricate lace and shimmering jacquards. “This is my first live show for FENDI, and it’s a celebration,” reflects Jones. “Our woman has let loose a bit – she’s going out, dressing up. We’ve all been locked away for so long that I think that’s what we all need right now.”
