Musical Masterpiece
Long-hidden indonesian epic set on stage
I La Galigo, a musical theatre piece adapted from the ancient Bugis epic Sureq Galigo by prolific playwright and stage director Robert Wilson, was held at the Ciputra Artpreneur Theater in Jakarta. The original 6,000page manuscript of Sureq Galigo is considered as the most voluminous literary work in the world. I La Galigo last made an appearance in its hometown of Makassar in South Sulawesi. After eight years of absence, the three-hour-long performance was presented to Jakartans on four separate dates. Former Vice President Jusuf Kalla—who has seen the play four times—was among the attendants.
