Breaking New Ground
Indonesia Tatler has an exclusive conversation with hotelier Emily Subrata, director of the well-established Sudamala Resorts, on the upcoming completion of the brand’s latest project in Labuan Bajo
A natural-born hotelier, Emily Subrata spent 15 years in Australia, completing her education at the University of Sydney with a first-class honors in Bachelor of Arts before starting of her career in education management.
She returned to Indonesia to take over her family business but chose to pursue an Executive Master of Business Administration in hospitality management at the prestigious Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland before taking on the role.
Taking after her father and the founder of Sudamala Resorts, Ben Subrata, Emily’s attention to detail and appreciation of art are the foundations of her commitment to developing bespoke boutique hotels that speak the language of Indonesia’s local art scene. The upcoming project in Labuan Bajo makes Sudamala Resorts the first of its kind on the island.
“The piece of land was purchased in 2017, and we hope to complete the project within the first half of 2020. However, the challenges that it has brought have been plenty,” she tells us. “Based on previous experience with our resort on Seraya Kecil Island, a 15-minute by speedboat ride from Labuan Bajo, the island is not well-equipped when it comes to logistics, infrastructure, and manpower. Therefore, most of the building materials have had to be brought in from Java and Bali, while at the same time, we have been educating the locals on the basic life skills that will benefit them while working in and around the resort,” Emily goes on to explain.
Despite the challenges, the team behind Sudamala Resorts believes that the market on this side of the country is ripe and ready to receive what brands have to offer. Regionally, Labuan Bajo is Indonesia’s hottest destination to visit, and Sudamala Resorts has made a bold but brilliant step with the upcoming establishment.
With a total of 84 rooms sprawled across the land, the establishment in Labuan Bajo will be Sudamala’s biggest to date. “We have many new projects up our sleeves, but for now, our main focus is to deliver the best we can in Labuan Bajo,” Emily concludes.
