This building in the heart of Edinburgh New Town has been a hotel since the 1880s – it was previously known as The Roxburghe. Following a £29 million renovation completed in September 2017, which encompassed all 199 rooms, it is now The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square. Among the new additions is a garden, a Lebanese restaurant and a spa. From £180 a night. phcompany.com

Following a fire that nearly destroyed the building, this boutique hotel, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, reopened in May. The renovation has brought the 28 rooms up to the latest specifications. It is a 15-minute walk from Princes Street, at the Stockbridge end of the New Town. Food and drink comes from bar and grill, Blackwood’s, and rooms start from around £149. niracaledonia.com

One of the newest luxury serviced apartments in the Scottish capital may already be familiar – Lateral City Apartments’ latest residence was once the headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland. Situated at the corner of St Andrew Square in the New Town and surrounded by Georgian buildings, the 50 apartments include a penthouse with extensive views. The site also features a restaurant, bar, coffee house and champagne bar. From £180 a night. lateralcity.com

Floating at the dockside of Port of Leith, flanked by the Royal Yacht Britannia, will be Edinburgh’s only “boatique” hotel. A vessel formerly belonging to the Northern Lighthouse Board is being transformed into 23 guestrooms and two luxury cabins. The accommodation will also feature a bar and restaurant, along with a ballroom that can hold 80 people. It is set to open in September. fingal.co.uk
