WHERE TO STAY IN TOKYO

W8STER

Imagine a first-timer in Tokyo. Limited to four to five days. Everyone tends to suggest Ginza for the easy access to everywhere. Would you go for the large chains such as Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt? Or try a local Japanese brand? I have Hilton and Marriott gold status, [Shangri-La] Golden Circle Jade and [Global Hotel Alliance] Discovery Black.

Try Intercontinental the Strings. A good hotel located two minutes’ walk from Shinagawa station, which has excellent connections to both international airports. It’s pretty easy to navigate the city from there with a little help from the Englishspeaking support staff near the ticket machines. The hotel is comfortable and reasonably priced.

I stayed at Hyatt Regency Tokyo, which is lovely with beautiful rooms and good views. It is a ten-minute walk from Shinjuku station.

I have stayed a few times at the Hilton Tokyo. You won’t go wrong there. You come into [Shinjuku] station from the airport and it has a courtesy bus outside if you have bags. The rest of the time it’s walkable from the station.

Stay in Shinjuku or Shibuya. Plenty of decent hotels and easy to get to where you need/want to be from both

neighbourhoods. Omotesando or Roppongi are also good. You might even consider Ikebukuro – all are well connected and have good amenities on the doorstep. But my first choice would still be either Shinjuku or Shibuya.

The Capitol Hotel Tokyu is lovely and in a great location.

I, too, based myself at the Hyatt Regency Tokyo. Not the most luxurious hotel you’ll ever stay in, but a solid upscale option that is well maintained and in a great location. A metro station is beneath the hotel. The Hyatt Regency represents a reasonable price point for expensive Tokyo, too.

For my only trip to Tokyo I stayed at the Imperial. I have no point of comparison with other Tokyo hotels, but I did stay in corporate-type hotels in Osaka and Kyoto and there was no comparison with the Japanese feel of the Imperial.

It was gracious, spacious, charming and welcoming. There’s a lovely park opposite and it’s close to amenities, shops and restaurants.

Hotel Century Southern Tower, Shinjuku. The airport limousine bus picks up from there. Views of Mount Fuji from one side of the hotel, which starts at the 19th floor.

I was a first-timer a few years ago on holiday with my wife. We flew with Emirates into Narita and caught the amazingly efficient airport bus to Shinjuku. We stayed at the Keio Plaza. I have stayed in better hotels, but it was in a great location with very good rooms and breakfast. A ten-minute walk from Shinjuku station and we had a great view of the city from our room.

I lived and worked in Japan for eight years. I still visit twice a year for work and I can recommend the Mitsui Garden Hotels. Most are modern and, if booked early enough, cheaper than the big chains. They are more Japanese than the Western hotels, which might be interesting for a first-timer. Ginza, Otemachi, Shinjuku, Shibuya and Tokyo Station are all good places to stay, as they are close to the Yamanote line, which will bring you to the most sights.

➜ RODDERS

The Peninsula is great, and the Park Hyatt. I have also used the Andaz (but it’s more of a business hotel).

➜ TRAMOR01

I usually use either the Westin, which is a short walk from Ebisu station, or Sheraton Miyako, which runs a shuttle bus to Meguro and Shinagawa stations. Both are conveniently located for Shibuya and Shinjuku.

➜ K1NGSTON

I agree about the Westin – a little outside the rat race but a delightful location and the airport bus goes directly to the hotel from Narita. Wherever you stay in Tokyo you are going to have an amazing time. SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES ON OUR FORUM BUSINESSTRAVELLER.COM/ FORUM
