DAWN TO DUSK

Photographer Stephen Wilkes discovers a day in the life of heritage sites in his book Day to Night (£100). Pictured here are gondoliers taking to the Grand Canal in 16th-century boats and clothing for the Venice Regata Storica. To achieve this other-worldly effect, Wilkes captures up to 2,000 successive photos from a stationary vantage point throughout the day, before editing and combining the best shots into a single panoramic shot, freezing time in the process. As a result, thousands of stories and human experiences come to life in one image, against a backdrop of world-renowned monuments.
