Tata Communications and Wi-fi+
Service providers depend to a large extent on their wholesale partners to enable entry into new markets and find fresh revenue streams. Tata Communications has a strong track record here, recently launching wi-fi+, a wi-fi cloud communication solution. wi-fi+ enables the customers of its mobile operator partners to access the Internet for calling, messaging, and data applications. Through access to more than 21 million wi-fi hotspots globally, the new solution allows operators to generate additional revenues from Wi-fi services.
Users must log in once, then they are automatically connected to the closest participating Wi-fi hotspot, even if they travel to a different city, country or continent. Tata says the solution marks the next step on a mission to enable truly seamless mobile communications on a global scale, encouraging the use of high-bandwidth applications such as video calling and music streaming services while on the move. Tata points out that while twice as many smartphone users make voice indoors than outdoors, the lack of indoor cellular coverage means that only a third of users are at present happy with their voice call quality and reliability.
Wi-fi+ harnesses Tata’s Cloud RTC expertise and connections to hotspots in more than 100 countries, offered by global Wi-fi operator ipass, creating a meshed network of borderless, global connectivity. It demands no upfront investment from mobile operators, while growing their revenues through extended OTT services. calls
