LOBBYING FOR SUCCESS IN LONDON
AFTER 115 YEARS OF TIRELESS HOSPITALITY HISTORY, IT’S ONLY FAIR THAT MANDARIN ORIENTAL HYDE PARK, London should refresh itself with a nip and a tuck. The park-side hotel has recently revealed the first part of its multimillion-pound renovation with a new reception and lobby lounge, jointly inspired by the hotel’s royal heritage of the early 20th century’s Golden Age of travel. Dominating the design are two new glass chandeliers that represent differing stages of a blooming flower, illuminating the Joyce Wang-designed public spaces, with carpets reminiscent of fallen leaves and bark-effect wall coverings. A huge aluminium sculpture by Fredrikson Stallard greets guests in the reception area, as well as blown glass pieces by San Min Lee featuring Chinese pottery from the Ch’ing Dynasty, hanging on either side of the new lobby lounge. The second phase of the renovation will see two new luxurious penthouse suites created, with private terraces and extensive park views. New York designer Adam D. Tihany has also been hired to oversee the renovation of The Spa at Mandarin Oriental London, as well as a light refurbishment of the hotel’s popular restaurants and bar – and fear not, the hotel will remain open throughout.
