Inmarsat has just announced its participation in Rolls Royce’s recently launched AAWA initiative. This is a Tekes* funded project that will bring universities, research institutes, ship owners and other stakeholders together to explore and address the economic, social, legal, regulatory and technological factors involved in making autonomous ships a reality. Inmarsat’s role in the project is to provide the satellite communications link and platform, considered essential to remote control capabilities. Data transfer between ships, as well as from ships and shore- based control centres, is one of the key development areas for remote controlled and autonomous ship research. Running from 2015 to the end 2017, the AAWA ( Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative) will build on existing ship- to- ship and ship- to- shore communication platforms and their effectiveness for supporting remote control functionality.
