a new era
Baselworld has changed. We have changed. Materials and designs in watches have changed. I am very thankful for that. Otherwise the world would never move forward. With new halls, new booths, new designs, new architecture – and, of course, new watches – Baselworld 2013 is bound to be the most exciting Baselworld since its humble beginning back in 1917.
The show has evolved into the most important watch and jewellery event in the world, and today it is a fantastic machine. In order to give you insight into its well-oiled engine we have interviewed some of the key people making it a glamorous event – from the woman who is the managing director of it all to the gentleman responsible for the cleaning and recycled rubbish.
However, when everything is new, it is important to remember where you are coming from. Which is why we have listed the 50 most influential wristwatches in the last century. Looking at these fantastic watches listed by decade, you might ask yourself: Are we moving forward or backwards? It’s up to you to decide. In some cases you may say that things used to be better. But by using the past as a springboard, the watchmakers of today have bigger potential than ever to create fantastic watches.
I really look forward to look at all the news and all the new fantastic timepieces presented with new world-class architecture. And I am sure that we will see plenty of unleashed potential during Baselworld 2013, which is certainly the start of a new era.
