That is the amount of time Russian cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov spent in space during a 1994 mission. During his 14-month stay on Mir he completed more than 7,000 orbits of the earth. Polyakov continues to hold the record for the longest time ever spent continuously in space by a human being.

That nearly two- decade- old historic record could finally be broken if American millionaire and space tourist Dennis Tito cam successfully carry out his plan to organize a private manned mission to Mars with a two-person crew to fly around the Red Planet and return to Earth in 501 days, beginning in January 2018.
