It had to hap­pen, right? The ques­tion is, does it presage The Quartz Ex­pe­ri­ence, take two, when the me­chan­i­cal watch in­dus­try is caught on the hop as a new tech­nol­ogy sweeps the board? Ap­ple prod­ucts may not be all they are cracked up to be – by Ap­ple mostly – but, for some, they do seem to have the ap­peal of, well, crack. And then comes the Ap­ple Watch, the first of its de­vices to be wear­able. It is not the first smart watch and it cer­tainly won’t be the last, although it does em­body orig­i­nal con­cepts in hard­ware and soft­ware alike (and how ill those words sit next to ones like ‘case’ and ‘bal­ance wheel’). More im­por­tant is the fact that it comes from Ap­ple, the world’s big­gest brand. Know thy en­emy...
