Iranians collect eight world weightlifting medals
Iranian weightlifters collected eight medals – including five golds – at the 2018 IWF World Championships in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
Iran’s Ali Hashemi and Reza Beiralvand notched up five of the nine medals in the men’s 102kg contests on Thursday while Iranian sensation Sohrab Moradi stole the show on the preceding night with triple men’s 96kg golds.
Hashemi’s overall 396kg lift gave him the total gold above Dmytro Chumak of Ukraine and Beiralvand who both tallied 393kg to claim the silver and bronze respectively.
En route to the total gold, Hashemi lifted 179kg for the snatch silver – following Uzbekistan’s Akbar Djuraev (180kg) – and then overcame the 217kg weight to finish third in the clean & jerk contest.
Having finished fourth in the snatch lifts, Beirlavand also managed to finish his campaign with a gold after lifting 218kg in a toe-to-toe clean & jerk competition – edging Chumak and Hashemi by one kilogram.
The introduction of the men’s 96kg weight class also saw Moradi set three new world records.
The 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist – a men’s snatch world-record holder with 184kg – bettered his own tally in Ashgabat as raised 186kg above his head to set a new record in winning the snatch gold.
China’s Tian Tao took the silver with 181kg and Yauheni Tsikhantsou of Belarus finished third, overcoming the 180kg weight.
The 30-year-old Iranian then went on to dominate the clean & jerk category as his 230kglift set a first-ever world record in the new weight class.
Tian again had to settle for a place behind the Iranian with 226kg while Qatar’s Faris Ibrahim Elbakh lifted 217kg for the bronze.
Moradi’s third goal came in the total standings as he set a world record with 416kg with Tian (406kg) and Romanian Nicolae Onica (391kg) coming in second and third places respectively.
Having started on November 1, the world championships finish today at the Ashgabat Olympic Complex.
