Ira­ni­ans col­lect four world karate medals

Kyr­gyzs­tan, Bel­gium, the US and Turkey be­fore an 8-1 semi­fi­nal vic­tory over Rus­sia’s Alexan­der Pshen­it­syn.

Ira­nian debu­tant Sara Bah­man­yar gave Iran some­thing to cheer about in the women’s divi­sion as the 19-year-old de­feated Ta­tiana Ry­balchenko of Rus­sia 5-0 to claim a -50kg ku­mite bronze. Ear­lier in the day, Zabi­ol­lah Pour­sheib had opened the ac­count for Iran with a bronze in the men’s ku­mite -84kg bouts.

The 32-year-old Ira­nian – seek­ing his fifth world cham­pi­onships’ medal – out­pow­ered Dani­yar Yul­da­shev of Kaza­khstan 3-0 for a third-spot fin­ish along with the Turk­ish Ugur Ak­tas. In the semi­fi­nals, Pour­sheib had been nar­rowly beaten by Ukraine’s Va­lerii Chob­o­tar 5-6.

The Ukrainian’s quest for the gold came to an end in the fi­nal as he was out­mus­cled by Croa­tia’s Ivan Kvesic.

Hav­ing started in Novem­ber 6, the 24th edi­tion of the com­pe­ti­tions fin­ishes to­day at the Span­ish cap­i­tal.
