Kyrgyzstan, Belgium, the US and Turkey before an 8-1 semifinal victory over Russia’s Alexander Pshenitsyn.
Iranian debutant Sara Bahmanyar gave Iran something to cheer about in the women’s division as the 19-year-old defeated Tatiana Rybalchenko of Russia 5-0 to claim a -50kg kumite bronze. Earlier in the day, Zabiollah Poursheib had opened the account for Iran with a bronze in the men’s kumite -84kg bouts.
The 32-year-old Iranian – seeking his fifth world championships’ medal – outpowered Daniyar Yuldashev of Kazakhstan 3-0 for a third-spot finish along with the Turkish Ugur Aktas. In the semifinals, Poursheib had been narrowly beaten by Ukraine’s Valerii Chobotar 5-6.
The Ukrainian’s quest for the gold came to an end in the final as he was outmuscled by Croatia’s Ivan Kvesic.
Having started in November 6, the 24th edition of the competitions finishes today at the Spanish capital.
