Australian couple proudly show off their giant cabbage

-

Rosemary Norwood and her husband Sean Cadman have spent the last nine months lovingly taking care of a cabbage growing at the bottom of their garden.

And all their hard work has paid off, as they have managed to produce a giant cabbage which is now the same size as a person, according to Mirror.

The semi-retired couple have been growing vegetables for years but said this is the biggest they’ve ever had.

Rosemary, 70, said, “It’s unbelievable how big it had gotten. I didn’t realize just the size of it until we picked it.

“We had a few cabbages that we had started growing altogether, but the others did not do as well as this one. So, we decided to just let it keep going.

“It could have kept growing I think, but we decided we should finally pick it because the insects were starting to get into it.

“It would have been too difficult to get them out, and we would have ruined it. So it was just time.

“I had no idea it was that big. My first reaction was to get a photo, because no one would have believed how huge it was.

“I also use a complete organic fertilizer, which think really helps.”

The couple, who live in Tasmania in Australia, explained they managed to keep out hungry wallabies and possums with a wire ‘fortress’ fence and had to place the I cabbage under a net to stop insects such as slugs and butterflies from getting into it.

Rosemary and Sean began growing the cabbage in April last year and finally decided to pick it last month — but admitted they did not realize how large it truly was until it was harvested.

And since then, the proud couple have managed to get an incredible three weeks’ worth of meals out of the cabbage — with both them and their guests enjoying a delicious stream of salads, coleslaw and German rotkohl.

Rosemary said, “Cabbages have always grown well in Tasmania, and this is a testament to that.

“I think it also has something to do with the weather and the soil fertility. We had a wet spring, good rainfall and hot weather this summer.

“The cabbage has fed us all really well for the last three weeks, and it still tastes fresh.

“We grow as many vegetables as we can for our guests. We cook dinner most evenings, so we like having lots of fresh produce.

“Everyone has loved eating the cabbage, and we’ve tried to be as creative as we can.

“Thankfully we love cabbage, so it’s certainly been a real treat.”
