Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) plans to develop steel production from iron ore by conducting further exploration activities and using private sector capacities.

The organization also announced that its main policies are to conduct exploration activities, supply iron ore to production units and complete ongoing projects to expedite the sustainable development of domestic steel industry.

To guarantee sustainable supply of iron ore to domestic steel units, IMIDRO is conducting exploration activities in more than 56 regions, spanning over 300,000 kilometers, in 25 provinces.

The organization has also placed on its agenda, since a few years ago, the use of private sector capacities and investment in building an iron ore concentrate plant with a capacity of 17.5 million tons per year and a pelletizing factory with an annual production capacity of 15 million tons in Sangan in the northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi.

The implementation of these two projects will create a total of 18,000 job opportunities of which 4,000 are direct and 14,000 indirect.

In addition, among the other instances of cooperation between the government and private sector in the field of mining iron ore are starting production from mines located in Gol-e Gohar (central Iranian province of Kerman), Chadormalu (central Iranian province of Yazd) and Jalalabad (Kerman Province).

Iran’s annual steel production is planned to reach 55 million tons by 2025. To achieve the target, an estimated 160 million tons of iron ore, close to 80 million tons of iron ore concentrate and 75 million tons of iron ore pellets will be needed.

At present, Iran’s iron ore reserves are estimated to stand at five billion tons, of which 3.3 billion tons are proven reserves. The figure accounts for two percent of the total global proven iron ore reserves.
