‘Lunch Time’ director to go to Cannes Residence

Young Iranian director Alireza Qassemi was selected to attend ‘The Residence’ section in the Cinéfondat­ion category of the Cannes Film Festival.

Director of award-winning short ¿lm ‘Lunch Time’, along with ¿ve other young talents from around the world, will attend the ¿ve-month course of the Residence.

Aboozar Amini (Afghanista­n), Álvaro Aponte (Puerto Rico), Diego Céspedes (Chile), Dmytro Sukholytky­y-sobchuk (Ukraine) and Vinko Tomičić (Chile) also will take part in the program, cinefondat­ion.com reported.

Born in 1990 in Tehran, Qassemi received his MFA in ¿lmmaking from Tehran University of Art and spent an exchange year at Buden-wurtemburg Filmakadem­ie in Germany.

In 2015, he founded the Globe Internatio­nal Silent Film Festival which is exclusivel­y reserved for non-verbal short ¿lms. Qassemi has written and directed four short ¿lms that have all been shown at many internatio­nal ¿lm festivals and that have won numerous awards. His last short ¿lm, ‘Lunch Time’, was in competitio­n at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

Since 2000, the Cinéfondat­ion category of the Cannes has launched this program through which it picks and accommodat­es young foreign ¿lmmakers who have already directed one or some short or feature ¿lms and gives them the chance to work on a new project.

The applicants would send their new ¿lm proposal to the festival and after the jury reviewed the submitted works, the best would be picked.

The six selected candidates of 38th the Residence will commit to spend the whole course at the designated site and not to leave it.

The Cannes festival is one of the world’s most publicized events which aims at drawing attention to and raise the pro¿le of ¿lms in order to contribute towards the developmen­t of cinema, according to the festival’s website.
