Iranian cartoonist­s take part at Cuba biennial

A group of Iranian cartoonist­s put their artworks on display at the 22nd Internatio­nal Biennial of Graphic Humor in Havana, the capital of Cuba.

Amir-reza Torkaman Rahmani, Jamal Dana, Elham Khalili-mehr, Rasoul Hajizadeh, Nima Shahmiri, Abbas Nasseri, Darioush Mehrdelan, Javad Takjou, Ali Qana’at, Armin Ganjdeh, Ali Shafei, Ehsan Cheraghi Iranshahi, Heybat Ahmadi, Neda Tanhayi-moqaddam, and Mohammad-saleh Razm-hosseini were the Iranian artists at the exhibition, which was held online due to the coronaviru­s restrictio­ns, IRNA wrote. The prominent Iranian cartoonist Masoud Shojaei Tabatabaei was a member of the jury. The biennial was organized by the Humor and Cartoonist Guild of the Union of Cuban Journalist­s, together with the Museum of Humor of San Antonio de los Baños, from April 11-14.

Under the motto, ‘Humor Brings Us Closer’, the exhibition included works with open and ‘Sovereignt­y’ topics.

A Tomy Prize for political humor, in memory of the late Cuban cartoonist Tomás Rodríguez Zayas, was awarded to the winner of the ‘Sovereignt­y’ category.

The Tomy Prize rewards the best exponents of counter-hegemonic, anti-imperialis­t and left-wing graphic discourse.

According to the organizers, a record 1,700 works were submitted to the biennial, with 223 works by 85 Cuban and foreign artists selected for the competitio­n.
