Taftan: A volcanic mountain in southeast Iran

-

The massive Taftan Mountain is situated only 70km away from the Pakistan border, southeast of Iran. It is an isolated, active volcanic mountain located in Sistan and Baluchestan Province. Khaash, located south of the mountain, is the nearest city to it.

Taftan Mountain has two famous summits with Chehel Tan Peak at 3,941m above sea level being the highest one. Iran has numerous mountains over 4,000m but this, in particular, is one of the most well-known, as it is a solitary mountain in the corner of Iran, with an active volcanic peak. It is attached to Lut Desert, adventureiran.com wrote.

The total length of the Taftan Mountain is 12km. The range is surrounded by unspoiled nature, consisting of several rivers, three lakes, trees, flora and fauna that live around the mountain. Two of the rivers have freshwater, while the third has salty water.

The base camp of this mountain is at 2,500m above sea level with the shelter at a height of 3,228m. Most people, with a good level of fitness, can hike up to the peak. The climbing season runs from March to November with the best period being in April and May.

The snow-capped Taftan Mountain towers above the surrounding arid terrain in eastern Iran.

In January 1902, the volcano was reported to be smoking heavily for several days, with an occasional bright, night-time glow. A lava flow was reported in 1993, but that may have been the mistaken observation of a molten sulphur flow.
