Former Belfast music school could be transformed into 20 new apartments

- BY JOHN MULGREW

A FORMER music school in Belfast could be razed to the ground and replaced with 20 new apartments.

The Porter’s Annex at Apsley Street on Donegall Pass was due to go under the hammer in November in an auction held by Lambert Smith Hampton, with offers of around £100,000 expected.

Now, Music Hall Services Ltd wants to knock the building down to make way for a four-storey, 20 apartment development.

The building is situated on the western side of Apsley Street, close to its junc- tion with Donegall Pass. The property, which was formerly the Belfast School of Music, is a detached building arranged over ground and first floors. Plans include the “demolition of the existing building and construction of new four-sto- rey apartment block containing 20 apartments”.

No one from the developer was available for comment yesterday.

The Belfast School of Music was opened at Donegall Pass in 1964.

It moved to its current premises in Fortwilliam Park in north Belfast in 2009.

The plans are the latest in a long line of proposed schemes across the city.

They includes luxury developments led by a company which counts KFC tycoon Michael Herbert as a director.

Among these is a 53-home scheme in east Belfast, and a 104-apartment plan in Knocknagoney, also in the city’s east.
