Man fined £750 for kicking two female tourists visiting city

- BY GEORGE JACKSON

A MAN who admitted attacking two female tourists on Londonderry’s Peace Bridge last year has been fined £750.

Caoimhan Rush, from Iniscairn Crescent in the Creggan area, was sentenced at the magistrates court in the city yesterday.

The two women who were kicked by 27-yearold Rush were both visitors from Scotland.

A solicitor for the Public Prosecution Service told District Judge Barney McElholm that the attack took place in the early hours of last September 30 and was recorded by security cameras.

The CCTV footage showed Rush stopping to talk to the two women briefly as they made their way along the Peace Bridge towards Derry city centre.

The defendant walked towards Ebrington Square before he turned back and kicked both women from behind without warning.

Rush then walked away towards Ebrington Square again, where he was arrested 20 minutes later after the women reported the incident to the police.

The prosecutor said neither of the two women made a formal statement of complaint to the police.

The defendant had pleaded guilty to a single charge of disorderly behaviour.

A defence solicitor said it was an unpleasant incident which Rush had no recollection of.

The defendant was told by Judge McElholm that his actions towards the two visitors from Scotland were disgraceful.

The judge warned Rush that if he didn’t pay the fine of £750 within a reasonable period of time, he would be sent to jail.
