Gerrard eyes bid for old pal Lucas, with Defoe also on Rangers’ radar

- BY CARL MARKHAM

RANGERS are reportedly interested in bringing boss Steven Gerrard’s former team-mate Lucas to Ibrox this summer.

Lucas — who joined Lazio in a £5m deal last summer — is keen on being reunited with former Liverpool team-mate Gerrard at Ibrox, and if he manages to get him signed this summer, it may prove to be a deal that leaves Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers feeling rather annoyed.

Like Gerrard, Rodgers worked with Lucas at Anfield. And also like the new Rangers boss, Rodgers has attempted to bring the Brazilian to Glasgow, with it being reported in May 2017 that the Hoops were targeting a move for the holding midfielder as Ulsterman Rodgers attempted to build on the major success he enjoyed during his first year in the Scottish Premiership.

Of course, Lucas (above) would make the move to Serie A, but he is now reportedly keen to join Gerrard’s revolution at Rangers. But the Gers surely face an uphill battle themselves trying to get a move done.

Should Rangers manage to get Lucas signed, it would arguably be a huge statement — not only because Lazio are not currently ready to let the midfielder leave, but because Rodgers had hopes to bring him to Celtic just one year ago.

Gerrard is also said to be keen to bring in Jermain Defoe this summer.

Rangers boss Gerrard and Defoe were team-mates at England level for a number of years, and the ex-Liverpool midfielder was always a big fan of the striker.
