Glens just cannot afford to keep conceding preventable goals, warns frustrated McFall

- BY COLIN SPEER

MANAGER Ronnie McFall was annoyed that Glentoran’s Achilles heel of conceding needless goals came back to haunt them at Institute on Saturday.

The Oval side led three times at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium, but weren’t able to win their first game in eight attempts.

“We can’t keep clean sheets, every week we keep losing silly goals from our perspective,” said McFall (right).

“Again, (Robbie) McDaid did really well, his first goal was a header and his second goal was a super finish too, but as I said the problems are at the other end at the minute and we need to start keeping clean sheets.

“We knew before we came that Institute play really good football, get it out from the back and pass the ball well, good midfield who rotate well, but in saying that if you score three goals against any team, you are expecting to win the match, especially away from home.”

As for McFall’s opposite number, Paddy McLaughlin felt a share of the spoils was a fair outcome and he was happy that this time Institute picked up a positive result when scoring late on.

“It was nice to be on the right side of a late goal, as we have been on the wrong side of it these last couple of weeks and it’s a wee bit soul destroying when you play so well, but to score our own late goal, we were just absolutely delighted,” said Stute manager McLaughlin.

“I think the first half we were really good and kept the ball really well and I think our goal that we scored in the first half is good as you’ll see this weekend, I’m nearly sure there were close to 20 passes in the build up to it, which is some play.

“It was a game which was end to end, but there wasn’t much quality in the second half from both sides and because of that the draw was probably a fair result.”
