BOY (3) HIT BY CAR LOSES FIGHT FOR LIFE

SECOND TRAGEDY FOR FAMILY IN TWO YEARS

- BY JONATHAN BELL

A THREE-year-old boy who was fighting for his life after being hit by a car has passed away.

Kai Corkum was hit by a silver Volkswagen Golf on Thursday evening as he crossed the Movilla Road in Newtownards.

The boy’s father collapsed at the roadside and required medical attention.

The youngster suffered catastrophic injuries and passed away in hospital on Friday evening.

It is the second tragedy to hit the family after they lost a baby daughter around two years ago shortly before her first birthday.

The Co Down community — described as a close circle — was united in offering the family their prayers and support.

DUP councillor Naomi Armstrong Cotter said: “Whatever (the family) need, however we can help, we are ready to be there for them.

“All everyone wanted to know was how (Kai) was doing and hoping he would pull through. “It is beyond sad.”

Kai attended the Chuckles nursery of Castle Gardens Primary School. On Friday it called off its Christmas service.

“Today has been a very challenging day for everybody associated with our school,” the school said in a Facebook post.

“Thank you for all the support, thoughts and prayers that we have been offered from schools, churches and members of the local community.”

The Bowtown Community Development Group also cancelled its youth club’s Christmas event due to be held on Monday as a mark of respect for the family.

Following the incident on Thursday police arrested a 21-year-old man. He was released yesterday pending further investigation.

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact them on 101.
