Dame Joan caught up in blaze drama

- BY JULIA HUNT

DAME Joan Collins had to be treated for smoke inhalation after a “terrifying” fire at her flat in London.

Fire crews were called to the actress’s building in Belgravia on Saturday afternoon and got the blaze under control.

Dame Joan (85) has now thanked firefighters and the NHS for their help, and also praised her “hero”, her husband Percy Gibson, for tackling the fire on the first floor of the seven-storey building.

She said on Twitter: “THANK U from the bottom of my to the marvelous @LondonFire who attended to the terrifying fire yesterday in our flat. #threealarmfire.

“My hero Percy had already doused the flames consuming the entire wall with handheld extinguisher (#donttakethisrisk). #gratitude #firefighters.”

A second message said: “And thanks also to the @NHSEnglandLDN #nhs #emt #Ambulance crew who took care of our smoke inhalation and comforted me.

“And the wonderful @metpoliceuk who kept the street closed and everyone safe. #gratitude.”

London Fire Brigade commissioner Dany Cotton responded to Dame Joan’s post, tweeting: “Thank you for your kind message. We were glad to be of assistance.

“Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to help.”

The actress later shared a video on Instagram showing her charred, peeling walls.

“Oh God!” she can be heard saying, as she pans the camera around to show the damage.

London Fire Brigade said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
