Kerr can fire Galbally to Ulster glory

- BY JOHN CAMPBELL

WHEN Galbally ended a 60-year wait to land a trophy by capturing the Tyrone Intermediate Football Championship title last month, it was to prove the launch-pad for what has proved to be the most memorable period in the club’s history.

Victories over Grange (Armagh), Laragh United (Cavan) and St Naul’s (Donegal) have propelled Galbally into tonight’s Ulster intermediate club championship final in which they will meet Monaghan standard-bearers Magheracloone knowing that victory will see them book their ticket into a sporting paradise.

They may have endured tough times in the past but Galbally’s overriding desire to keep the flag flying can bring its own reward at the Athletic Grounds, Armagh (7.00pm).

The team’s stunning progress over recent weeks has not only seen the Tyrone title come into their custody but top scorer Daniel Kerr and defender Conor Quinn has been brought into the Tyrone senior squad.

“Since we booked our place in the Ulster final, this has been the only topic of conversation in our area,” states Kerr,

Magheracloone disposed of Derry champions Foreglen and Down title-holders Glenn in reaching tonight’s shoot-out .

Former Monaghan county team aces Tommy Freeman and Gavin Doogan can again prove guiding lights tonight with the help of James Ward, Alan McCahey and Michael Metzger in particular.

Tommy Freeman’s scoring exploits in Monaghan’s colours helped to make him one of the best forwards in the province and he is determined to shoot from the hip again tonight.

“I am desperately keen to see us win this game and I want to do my utmost to ensure we land the Ulster title,” insists Freeman.

With Jamie Kieran partnering Gavin Doogan at midfield, Magheracloone feel they have an attacking axis from which to fashion scores but then Galbally can also look to Liam Rafferty, Enda McGarrity, Conor Donaghy, Ronan Nugent and Cormac Donaghy for inspiration.
