Carl lined up for historic world title bid in Belfast
CARL Frampton will bid for history when he challenges WBO World super-featherweight champion Jamel Herring (right) with Belfast’s SSE Arena expected to be the venue in April next year. Windsor Park also remains a possibility.
Frampton comprehensively outboxed Tyler McCreary over 10 rounds at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas in the early hours of yesterday morning, dropping the American twice with body shots despite damaging his left hand which had fractured twice during his training camp.
The hand been broken in August in a freak accident just days before he was to have fought in Philadelphia.
Now the pride of Belfast is being lined up for a hero’s return to his home city for the opportunity of becoming the first boxer from Northern Ireland to win world titles at three different weights, having previously held the IBF/WBA super-bantamweight titles and WBA featherweight belt.
“If that fight can be made for Belfast that would be fantastic. Jamel is a big man but I’m daring for greatness. I just need to let my hands heal and see what happens,” said Frampton. “I thought I boxed well and it was good to be back. Although I had re-fractured the left hand there was no way I wasn’t going to fight.”
Bob Arum, the world’s leading promoter, has said that he is ready to tie up a deal for Frampton to face Herring, who was at ringside in Vegas, and has no doubt the American will put his title on the line in Belfast.
