If you’re angry at PM’s proposed Brexit plan, don’t vote for Foster or her party at the general election

-

SO, apparently, unionists, angry at Boris’s Brexit deal, should consider street protests or even civil disobedience.

But surely if unionists want to protest against Brexit — and particularly the form of Brexit being touted — the easiest thing to do would be not to vote for those unionist politicians that have sold Northern Ireland out in the first place.

No matter how the pro-Brexit unionist politicians wish to spin this (and particularly how DUP politicians want to spin this), they are to blame for Northern Ireland’s Brexit dilemma.

From the very beginning of the referendum campaign, it was abundantly clear that neither the British Government nor the EU were ever going to enforce the border in the event of UK leaving the EU.

If the UK was going to leave the EU, then Northern Ireland was always going to be left behind in some form of customs arrangement, with an open border for goods and people.

Arlene Foster even wrote to the Prime Minister requesting this should be the case. In June 2016, along with Martin McGuinness, she wrote to Theresa May and asked that no barriers (‘borders’) be erected on the island of Ireland.

Well, that’s exactly what we have been given. Boris Johnston has delivered to the letter what Arlene requested.

So, remind me: why are unionists angry at Boris (or the EU, for that matter)?

The DUP wanted the UK to leave the EU with no borders, or barriers, on the island of Ireland. So, Boris and the EU went and negotiated such a deal.

And, with all current predictions pointing to Boris winning the general election, the deal Arlene asked for — and the deal Boris negotiated — is the deal Northern Ireland is going to get.

So, tell me again: who are unionists supposed to be protesting against? If we should be protesting at all, it should be against those that betrayed Northern Ireland with their support for Brexit and those that demanded no barriers, or borders, on the island of Ireland.

And surely, if unionists really care about Northern Ireland and the Union, rather than street protests or nonsense civil disobedience protests, they shouldn’t be supporting Arlene, or any of her candidates, at the ballot box?

It’s simple: don’t vote for Arlene’s deal.
