Superb tennis in Wicklow!
Four final matches decided
THE FINALS of the Conway Media Handicap Championships held at Wicklow Tennis Club last Thursday took place under perfect weather conditions for the competitors and fans alike.
Four finals took place on the night - the men’s and ladies singles and the men’s and mixed doubles. The ladies doubles final had taken place the previous Thursday.
The mixed doubles final proved a particularly enthralling encounter and took over two and a half hours before Carol Byrne and Will Goodbody managed to edge out Brian Speakman and Brian Fanning.
Kiernan Scott defeated Mark Redmond in the men’s singles and Áine Teevan beat Naoise Gallagher in the ladies final. Carol Byrne and Marie Haughton were the ladies doubles champions after their victory over Áine Teevan and Karen O’Sullivan. Ingvard Tonnies and Peter Finnegan defeated Ken O’Dwyer and Ray Moran in the men’s doubles finals.
During the prize presentations, Club President Robert Earls welcomed Paula Conway of Conway Media and thanked her for their continued support in sponsoring this very popular event each year. Kieran Leggett, tournament co-ordinator, thanked all the tournament committee who ensured the competition ran smoothly.
Afterwards refreshments were supplied by Ellen Sinnott of Diamond Bowl and Kidzone.
