Sad passing of Jonathan (40)

- By DEBORAH COLEMAN

THE community of Arklow was shocked and saddened to learn of the recent death of Jonathan Malone from Cluain Ard.

Jonathan passed away at his home on Wednesday, February 1, at the age of 40, following a long illness.

He bore his illness with great dignity and was a member of the national Sarcoma Action Group, a lobby group set up last year to campaign for the retention of a sarcoma specialist at St Vincent’s Hospital.

Jonathan was treated at St Vincent’s for this rare form of cancer and was vocal in highlighting the importance of sarcoma patients having a consultant with relevant expertise in treating the condition. As of two weeks ago, sarcoma patients in Ireland have been without this care as the extended contract expired.

A native of Kildare, Jonathan studied engineering in Waterford, and during this time met Clare Bulman, who would later become his wife.

The couple married and settled in Arklow and in time, became parents to Amy (6) and Emily (2).

Jonathan worked in the engineering industry and for much of his career, was self-employed in this field. In recent years, during his illness, he also helped out with his father John’s business.

John set up Wheel Sense bike shop in Arklow, and Jonathan supported the venture as much as he could.

The great outdoors held huge appeal for Jonathan and he was a keen cyclist.

He started off as a road racer taking part in numerous events including the popular FBD Milk Rás.

Later, his passion turned to mountain biking and he loved getting out on his bike around Glenart, Glendalough and Croghan.

Jonathan also loved keeping up to date with IT and was intrigued by the many regular advancements in technology.

Jonathan was remembered by all who loved him at his funeral service last Friday.

A large number of friends and relatives from Arklow, Kildare and Waterford gathered at Ss Mary and Peter’s Church, Arklow for the service.

Jonathan is sadly missed by his loving wife Clare, daughters Amy and Emily, parents John and Lavinia, siblings Jackie, Richard, Bobby and Shane, mother-in-law Lily, father-in-law Dinny, brother-in-law Mark, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

May he rest in peace.
