World Day of Prayer Service: An interdenom­inational World Day of Prayer service prepared by women of the Philippine­s will be held in Bray Methodist Church, Eglinton Road, Bray on Saturday, March 4, at 11 a.m.

Christ Church Fashion Show Tomorrow Night (Thursday): This year’s show takes place in Fishers, Newtownmou­ntkennedy, tomorrow night (Thursday) from 7 p.m. Tickets, €20, available from the Travel Boutique, Bray, or the Christ Church Parish Office. The ticket price includes wine and nibbles and a 10% discount on all purchases made on the night.

HOLY REDEEMER PARISH

Holy Redeemer Youth Centre: We would like to invite all secondary school students to join us in the Holy Redeemer Youth Centre on any Wednesday (1 p.m. to 5 p.m.); Friday Night (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.) or Saturday (2 p.m. to 6 p.m.). A great atmosphere to make new friends in a lovely environmen­t with loads of fun filled activities, movies and pool.

Prayer Service Ministry Training This Saturday: A training session will be held for those interested in leading prayer services in your parish. The training will cover the different aspects of parish life, both liturgical and pastoral, and aims to give an understand­ing of the need for lay people to step into the breech in the absence of a priest. The following topics will be covered – Why now? – Growing our faith communitie­s – Working through the prayer service booklet – Questions and conclusion­s. We will of course have the proverbial ‘cuppa’ and it will be a light hearted and informal gathering. It is ideal for those already involved in reading at Mass but all are welcome. Date: This Saturday in the Little Flower Hall, Holy Redeemer, Bray, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For catering numbers, please inform the parish office if you are attending.

Pro Life: The local branch of the Pro Life Campaign will be hosting a coffee morning on Thursday, March 2, in the Coffee Dock, Little Flower Hall, Holy Redeemer Church, Main Street, Bray at 10.30 a.m. Tea, coffee and refreshmen­ts will be served. Thank You: The organisers of last Sunday morning’s cake sale in aid of Habitat for Humanity for transition year students travelling to Zambia to build houses, which was held after 10.30 a.m. and midday Masses, thank all those who supported this event.

The Coffee Dock: Is open each morning Monday to Friday after 10 a.m. Mass and on Sundays after the 10.30 a.m. Mass. Tea, coffee, biscuits and occasional­ly cake is served. The Coffee Dock also offers a great source of community and friendship for people within the parish and outside the parish. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all. Come in for a chat and a cuppa and perhaps make new acquaintan­ces while you are there.

Volunteers are needed to help in the Coffee Dock Monday to Friday mornings. The commitment is from 9.30 a.m. to approximat­ely 11.30 a.m.. One morning every second week. Please phone Philippa at 087 1442969 if you think you can help.

Lenten Activities: Mini Retreat Monday, March 6, to Friday, March 10, at the 7 p.m. Mass; Gospel Reflection groups. Mondays of Lent after 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Mass; Life in the Spirit Seminars starting on Wednesday, March 8, and each Wednesday following; Are you in touch with your Faith? A discussion group which will look at some of Fr John’s Homilies, starts Thursday, March 2, and continues on the following Thursdays in the Youth Centre 7.30 p.m.

Lourdes Pilgrimage – September 7 to September 12: The parish will once again join the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes in September. The fully inclusive price is €725pps. Garda Vetting: The task of re-vetting all involved in parish ministries will begin in the coming weeks. This is to comply with legal requiremen­ts.

Lourdes 2017: Bookings for our parish pilgrimage to Lourdes are now being taken in the Villa Pacis. Thank you to all who supported our recent weekend collection at which a total of €1,700 was collected. Thank you all for your most generous support.

Lent: Ash Wednesday is on March 1 this year and marks the beginning of Lent. It is a day of fasting and abstinence and Ashes will be blessed and distribute­d at all Masses. The Novena of Grace will take place from Saturday, March 4, till Sunday, March 12,. Novena prayers will be said at all Masses. This year’s Novena will be led by Fr Kevin O’Rourke SJ Prayer leaflets available in the church. Trócaire boxes will be available in the church porches from next weekend.

Cake Sale and Informatio­n Day: Council 100 (Bray) of the Knights of St Columbanus will hold a cake sale and informatio­n day in Villa Pacis this Sunday February after the 10.30 a.m. and midday Masses. Members will be present to explain the work of the Knights in the Bray community.

CUALANN SOCIETY

Last Thursday night, James Scannell, PRO of the Bray Cualann Historical Society, the local history society for Bray and North Wicklow, was the guest speaker for the February meeting of the Bray Cualann Historical Society which took place at 8 p.m. in the Royal Hotel, Bray, at which he revealed the remarkable story of ‘Captain Hermann Goertz: The German WW2 Gatherer, who landed in full military uniform’ in 1940 and the contacts he had with numerous people in County Wicklow and County Dublin, stayed in several safe houses in the North Wicklow and South Dublin area, and remained in circulatio­n for over 15 months till finally arrested in Clontarf, Co. Dublin.

The March meeting of the Bray Cualann Historical Society takes place in the Royal Hotel, Bray, on Thursday, March 16, at which Dr Charles Hannon will present his lecture on ‘Roger Casement and 1916.’ All welcome to attend.

Annual Membership of the Bray Cualann Historical Society is €15 and covers two Adults+2 Children, and can be taken out at any meeting of the society. Admission to lectures is €5 visitors – members free.

In the meantime members are invited to attend tonight’s (Wednesday) 6 p.m. meeting of the Old Dublin Society, the local history society for Dublin City and county, in the Conference Room of Dublin City Library and Archive, 138 – 144 Pearse Street, Dublin two, at which Gregory Young will present his lecture ‘Francis Smyth and Sons, umbrella manufactur­ers, Dublin, 1836-1967’.
