ANNACURRA

On Sunday morning last we gathered as an entire community to bring our friend Sean to his village of Annacurra for one last time, As he was carried over the bridge, the green and gold shone proud and bright just as he always did.

As a community we cannot express our sense of loss and grief, on the all to sudden passing of Sean.

He will always be remembered fondly and we express our sympathy’s to his family, neighbours and many friends May you rest in peace, Sean Sleep well and God bless.

AVONDALE

Avondale is in mourning this week as we say goodbye to our great friend Johnny Cullen.

Over his lifetime Johnny was a great community activist who served the local community with distinction on many levels.

He was a club legend having been involved with Avondale for many years. He was one of the main drivers of the building of our sports complex in the early 1980s, was a long serving senior football selector, club chairman for 10 years and served on many club committees with distinction.

His passion for the club was endless and he had a unique way of getting things done.

One of his greatest attributes was that you could argue with him while still remaining his friend. He was a true gentleman.

The huge esteem in which he was held was ev- ident last Monday as hundreds of people turned out to pay their respects to a great GAA man, and a wonderful friend. Rest in peace Johnny, you will be sadly missed by all who were honored to have known you. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a aimn dilis

ÉIRE ÓG GREYSTONES

FIXTURES - Éire Óg’s opening game in the 2017 Arklow Bay Hotel Division 1 League is in the nature of being a baptism of fire. They are at home to county champions Baltinglass on Sunday, March 12, at 11.30 a.m. The lads have been training hard for this game and are very deserving of your support.

On Saturday, March 18 (remember the boxing is that evening) our senior hurlers play in Greystones at 3p.m. in Div 4 of the Leinster league.

Comhgáirdeachas to the Wicklow Ladies football team on their unbeaten run to date in Division 4 of the NFL. Two of the players on the panel, Laurie Ahern and Aoife Gillen, learned their football in Éire Óg.

LOTTO - The numbers drawn on February 27 were 2, 13, 22, and 25. Brian O’Sullivan and Peter Hanlon shared the weekly cash prize. The pota óir was not won and stood at €4,400 for Monday, March 6.

On Saturday, February 25, our under-14 camógs lifted anchor and set sail for, what was for our infant camogie outfit, the uncharted waters of the Dublin Camogie League. Their first outing in this adventure, thankfully favoured by pleasant if somewhat blustery conditions, had them undertaking the long journey to Castleknock to play St. Brigids.

With many of its players under 13 years the team lacked a little on physical presence and experience. However, in their feistiness and determination the girls made up, to a considerable extent, for these disadvantages.

This was evidenced in the Éire Óg girls not being a whit intimidated by their much more mature opponents.

That the game had to be played on a full-sized pitch, a totally new experience for ár gcailíní, added further to the challenge they faced. The Éire Óg girls were into action straight away, and from throw-in to final whistle battled bravely against the odds.

There were lots of good performances on the day but special mention must be made of Aisling (0-1), of Emily in defence and Faith in mid-field. The stand-out moment of the game involved full-back Siobhán (briseann an dúchas……..,the apple does not…….) catching a high velocity, net-directed sliothar and delivering with graceful strike 50m. to safety.

An auspicious start to the under-14s campaign which carries hope for the future of the sport within the club. Tosach maith leath na h-oibre.

The under-8s and under-10s started their 2017 training on Saturdayurday morning on the astro turf in Charlesland. The coaching team was delighted to welcome on board two new members, Fiona and Evelyn. Training takes place every Saturday at 10.45 a.m. and is open to girls born after 2009 and 2007 respectively. Beidh fáilte mór roimh cailíní nua. Why not “put a hurl in your daughter’s hand?”

A gentle reminder to all parents to complete their online Garda vetting form so that they can help with small tasks around the club during the year like lifts, refreshments etc...Please direct any questions on Camogie Garda Vetting to Freda O’Kelly – Fredaok13@gmail.com

PEIL NA GCAILÍNÍ - What is the function of team sport in society? A question which would give rise to a lot of debate and would take a lot of time to tease out.

However, its answer would certainly include the promotion of athleticism and the promotion of kicking, manipulative and other skills. Anyone who has seen the top ladies teams in action would have to agree that Peil na mBan (LGF) is a sport which has a wider range of these skills than most other team sports.

Éire Óg has girls teams at under-12, under-14 and under-16 levels. Training for these teams takes place on Thursday evenings in the Éire Óg grounds between 6.30 and 7.30 p.m. with an extra session for uner-12s at Saturdayurday at mid-day. Why not drop down and take advantage of these sessions to improve your fitness and allround dexterity? Ladies Gaelic, like basketball, is a low-contact sport.

Please keep an eye on our official club page for future fixtures. The fundraiser in Shay Doyle’s held for the late Anto Doyle was a great success! We wish to thank everyone who sold tickets, bought tickets, donated great prizes on the night for the raffle and to everyone who turned up to give something back to the man who worked so tirelessly for our club.

Our Seniors kick off the league campaign on March 12, at 11.30am at Dunbur grounds in Wicklow Town against our neighbours and old rivals St. Patricks.
