Man who robbed Wicklow bookies at knifepoint gets suspended sentence

-

A BRAY man who produced a knife while robbing Boyle Sports in Wicklow has been given a two-year suspended sentence.

Patrick Lyons, 17 The Printworks, Adelaide Villas, Bray, admitted taking €225 from Boyle Sports on March 26, 2016.

He appeared before Judge Terry O’Sullivan in Wicklow Circuit Court last Friday, March 10. The court heard that the money was not recovered.

Judge O’Sullivan noted that while a knife was produced, there was no actual violence, rather a threat.

The court heard that Lyons’ actions were due to gambling and drug debts and the crime was out of character. The court heard that Lyons is unlikely to be back before the courts again and that he is addressing gambling issues.

‘He’s on a short leash. If he doesn’t follow the court’s directions, he faces incarceration,’ said Judge O’Sullivan. The conditions of his suspended sentence include that he must keep the peace and be of good behaviour, stay drug free, attend gambling and addiction counselling and follow the directions of the probation services.
