SCHOOL MUSICAL

What a fantastic few nights at the Mermaid Arts Centre last week, when CCA students treaded the boards for this year’s annual school musical, ‘Calamity Jane’.

Calamity Jane can outrun and outshoot any man in Deadwood. Hard, boastful and desperate to impress, she travels to Chicago on the Deadwood Stage to recruit a star, Adelaide Adams. But things don’t go too smoothly for Calamity, as everyone in town favours the new girl and she struggles to keep her jealousy and pride in check. It takes her long standing enemy Wild Bill Hickok to make her see sense, and realise her Secret Love.

The musical includes some very famous numbers, including ‘Secret Love’, ‘Black Hills Of Dakota, ‘Deadwood Stage’ and ‘Windy City’. Choreographer Ms Yvonne Prendergast and Musical Director Ms Siobhán Gallagher have worked hard with the cast over the last few months as have many staff, students and the parents’ council.

JUNIOR GAELIC FOOTBALL

CCA 1-11, AVONDALE CC 2-3 – This Co. Wicklow Schools quarter final was played last week in a very cold and windy Ballinakill. CCA played with the strong wind in the first half and lead by 0-7 to 0-1 at half time. This lead was wiped out early on in the second half with Avondale scoring two goals and it looked ominous for us.

However, it was then that our players showed all the qualities that make great footballers – determination, skill and courage. They scored 1-4 against the wind, the goal coming from the boot of Oisin Cullen and Kamil Pawlak pulling off a brilliant save in our goal. Man of the match was Sam Ireland in defence.

ART TRIP

On Friday, March 3, the fifth and sixth Year Art classes had a guided tour of the Lucien Freud exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). They then went to Russborough House where they enjoyed a guided tour of the house with all its Georgian splendour.

COUNTY ENTERPRISE FINALS

Well done and best wishes to the three Transition Year and the three First Year Mini-companies who have qualified for the Wicklow County Enterprise Finals, which will take place at the end of March.

SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE

We really enjoyed this year’s Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations, which saw students and staff really making an extra effort to ‘bi ag caint as Gaeilge’. Students did ceilí dancing, learned seanfhocail, and took part in in-class Trath na gCeist.

One of the highlights of last week was the short play ‘as Gaeilge’ organised by our TY students with the students at Newtown Primary School. There was also a ‘Club Gaeilge’ each lunchtime, where students came along and used their ‘cúpla focal’ in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
