Injured Maulin hillwalker rescued
WICKLOW’S mountain rescue teams came to the aid of two walkers who sustained injuries in separate incidents recently.
On Sunday, March 12, the Gardai contacted both the Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team and the Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team at 11.25 a.m. to make them aware of a hillwalker who suffered a lower leg injury while out walking with a friend on Maulin.
Due to the nature of the injury, a decision was made to request air support. Rescue 116 was already assisting with an ongoing call-out in Moneystown, so Rescue 117 was tasked from Waterford. In the meantime, a stretcher evacuation commenced. Rescue 117 remained on standby until an mountain rescue doctor assessed the man’s injury and confirmed that an ambulance transfer to hospital was sufficient.
Later in the evening, at around 5.40 p.m., the two mountain rescue teams were tasked with assisting a 43-year-old male in difficulty in the area of Trooperstown Hill. He had been out running when he suffered a shoulder injury. His injury was stabilised and pain medication was administered.
He was then transferred to a mountain rescue vehicle and transported to a HSE ambulance where he was again assessed by a paramedic and taken to hospital. The incident was stood down at 6.50 p.m. and represented the 21st call-out so far this year.
