GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP

Our two Geography classes headed down to a very sunny Murrough on Monday, March 13, We are privileged in the schhol to have this wonderful and unique coastal landscape at our door and incorporate it into our geography studies at every opportunity. This year the title involved ‘an investigation into the impacts of the processes of coastal transportation and deposition on a coastal landform’.

The students were very involved and creative in devising the methods. These involved using oranges to measure longshore drift, spray painting stones of various sizes, measuring the slope of the beach and counting waves. As we were there at high tide there were plenty of wet feet.

It was a very relaxing yet productive day which yielded some interesting result. Students will be busy for the next few weeks analaysing these results and writing up their reports which account for 20% of their total marks.

FRENCH VISIT

East Glendalough School welcomed 51 French students and four teachers from Lycée Descartes, Montigny le Bretonneux, to the school on Monday morning, March 13. The students attended classes before leaving for a visit to Wicklow Gaol.

BUSINESS STUDIES

CROSS COUNTRY

All-Ireland Schools XC (senior girls individual 2,500m) results: Ailbhe Flynn – 35th out of 70. Dara Owens – 46th out of 70 Hannah Blake was injured so she couldn’t race. Well done to all the girls.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Our first and second year boys basketball teams played their Regional quarter finals on Wednesday, March 15. Unfortunately we lost out in both matches. Both games were very tense and closely fought with our first years losing 28: 24 against St Tiernan’s (after overtime) and our second years losing 22: 21 against Kishoge CS Neither team really played to their full potential on the day but both sets of players cannot be faulted for effort.

Although the disappointment of losing will be fresh in the boys’ minds, the season as a whole has been quite successful with both teams winning three of the four matches they played. The vast majority of the boys never played basketball before till this year and they have improved technically and tactically as the season has progressed. Hopefully as they continue to play and practice, we’ll see further improvement in the years ahead.

RUN A MUCK

A team of 18 Transition Year students took part on March 11 in the Run A Muck Adventure race at Coolcarrigan Estate Co. Kildare. This has become a proud EGS tradition and as always all our entrants successfully completed the race. Thorfinn Newton was our fastest runner, smashing minutes off his previous time and finished in 10th place out of a field of over a thousand. What an outstanding achievement by all.

YSI DRAMA

The YSI group are preparing their two minute drama on ‘Syria Aware’ for the YSI speak out Tuesday, March 21, in the RDS.

TY NEWS

This week has seen a flurry of activity and industry as the TY’s prep for the upcoming show. At one point last tuesday there were no fewer than 21 students painting, sawing, hammering, lightning, smoke machine repairing and generally pitching in. All of which shows the fantastic team spirit and ethos of the year group as a whole.

Elsewhere we wish luck to the YSI group who have undertaken serious work with the Syria campaign, a special thank you to Ms Geraghty for all the hard work and extra curricular time she has put into co-ordinating the group.

Finally the TY’s enjoyed a packed day trip up to Dublin last Friday. Groups enjoyed various activities with highlights being the GPO 1916 tour, Humans need not apply at the Science gallery and the fascinating but somewhat grisly ‘Bodies’ exhibition.
