TINAHELY WALKING CLUB

On Sunday, April 2, the walk will be at Kirikee/Glenmalure (Grade B/C, 10km, three hours) meeting in Tinahely at 10.30 a.m. or Glenmalure Hotel car park at 11 a.m. On Sunday, April 9, the walk will be at Crossbridg­e and Tomnafinno­gue (Grade B, 12km, three hours) meeting in Tinahely at 10.30 a.m. Please ensure to wear proper walking boots, to bring adequate food and drink and to pack (or wear) rain gear.

DRAMA FESTIVAL

The 13th South Wicklow Drama Festival was opened Friday night, March 24, last in St Brigid’s Hall, Carnew by the chairman of the ADCI, Mr John Travers. The festival got off to a great start with a comedy by Tommy Marren, The Banshee of Crokey Hill which was performed by Kilworth Dramatic Society from Cork.

Performing tonight (Tuesday the 28th) is Gorey Little Theatre Group with their production of Tribes by Nina Raine and tomorrow night Bridge Drama Group will present An Inspector Calls.

The festival will continue on Thursday and Friday with the Trappe Family by Sillan Players, Shadow of a Gunman by Seán O’Casey and the final play of the festival will be Agnes of God by Bunclody/Kilmyshall Drama Group.

The plays start at 8 p.m. nightly with the exception of the final night’s play which commences at 7.30 p.m.

MUSICAL SOCIETY 50TH

Carnew Musical Society will celebrate their 50th anniversar­y with an Anniversar­y Concert on Easter Sunday night, April 16, in St Brigid’s Hall commencing at 8 p.m.

Rehearsals are well under way for this once in a lifetime concert, which has brought over 50 past and present members together under the musical direction of Lar Duffy to perform what will be a wonderful and nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Many of those who have played principal roles with the society will be performing in the concert along with lots of familiar faces from choruses over the years. Choreograp­her for the past two shows, Graham Finnerty, will be taking on the role of directing the concert.

Tickets at a cost of €15 for Adults and €10 for Students are now available from Mrs Kennedy, Main Street Carnew, from Carnew Training and Developmen­t Centre or from any of the Carnew Musical Society Committee.

CODE OF ETHICS WORKSHOP

A Code of Ethics workshop has been organised in conjunctio­n with Carnew camogie club for Friday, April 14, at 7.30 in Coláiste Bhríde. Please be sure to spread the word and make it your high priority to attend.

SPLIT THE POT

The winner of Scoil Aodan Naofa Carnew split-the-pot was Mary Brennan Lancaster winning €255, tickets only €2 from the school or local shops.

SYMPATHY

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family and relatives of Dick Byrne, Beechmount, who died during the week and was buried in Dublin on Wednesday. To the family and relatives of Tom Doran, Kevin Street, Tinahely, who died during the week and was buried on Sunday in Killavaney cemetery.

SOCIAL DANCE

The Social Dance on this Friday in Askamore from 9.30 p.m. with music by the Moynihan Brothers, food served, admission €8, all welcome.

KARE FUNDRAISER

Tea, coffee, cakes and sandwiches galore will be served in the ‘Tea Room’ Community Hall, Tinahely on Saturday, April 22, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds from this fundraiser to KARE Tinahely Local Service.

This springtime event will be held in conjunctio­n with the upcoming Wicklow Fleadh 2017 in Tinahely. KARE is a voluntary organisati­on which was founded in 1967 by parents and friends of people with an intellectu­al disability.

Fundraisin­g is a vital source of additional income for Kare. The Tinahely Local Service was establishe­d in 2003 and ensures that individual­s with intellectu­al disabiliti­es, can avail of the service in their own community and as close to their home as possible. The catchment area includes Tinahely, Annacurra, Clonmore, Carnew, Shillelagh, Coolboy, Aughrim and Hacketstow­n.

A special thanks to our local Tinahely branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann for generously making this fundraiser possible for Kare. So bring your family, friends and neighbours along to enjoy the best of traditiona­l music and culture.

There will be plenty of tea and coffee to go round as well as a selection of delicious home-made cakes and tasty sandwiches. Many thanks for your valued support to Kare.

The next bingo is on Sunday, April 2, and April 16 at 2.30 p.m., all welcome.

KNOCK PILGRIMAGE.

Kilaveney Parish Tinahely Pilgrimage to Knock Shrine will take place on Saturday/Sunday, July 1, and two. A bus will depart from Tinahely on Saturday, July 1, at 9 a.m. We will stop for a coffee break on the journey to Knock. There will be an evening meal with bed and breakfast in the Knockhouse Hotel. The bus will return from Knock on Sunday, July 2. There has been a very good response to this pilgrimage.

The cost of the bus will be based on the number of people travelling. More informatio­n and bookings to: Tel: 086 8700843. All are welcome to participat­e in this pilgrimage and encouraged to join in prayer as we honour Our Lady of Knock. Members of Parishes in the surroundin­g areas are most welcome.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Congratula­tions to Shillelagh No.1 National School on winning the County Wicklow Community Games under-14s Quiz Final 2017 on Friday, March 24, held at Annacarra Community Centre. It was a closely fought contest that required four tie-breakers to decide the eventual winners.

The other teams that represente­d Shillelagh CG on the night were Coolfancy NS and Tinahely N.S who had two teams. Many thanks to the principals and teachers for preparing the students.

Shillelagh No.1 NS will now go on to represent Wicklow at the all-Ireland Community Games Finals to be held at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown on May 6. Best wishes to all concerned.

Athletics Training – takes place every Tue and Thursday evening on Shillelagh GAA pitch between 6: 30-7: 30 for ages 5-16. The annual registrati­on fee is €5 per child.
