Soccer action

-

A few of the teams were in action last weekend. The under-nines were in Roundwood on Sunday morning and lost a very tight game by the odd goal. Kaiter Barretto celebrated his birthday in fine style with a fine hatrick and he was best on the day along with Ross Marchelska, Luke Kelly and Oisin Short.

The under-13s had their second leg of the Cup semi-final away to Roundwood and suffered the awful fête of losing out on a final spot via the dreaded penalties. The Glens trailed 4-2 from the first leg and got the perfect start when Dylan Henry powered home a brilliant header which was followed up soon after by John Fox who coolly slotted away his opportunity. It remained 2-0 and all square in the tie till after halftime when Luke Kelly made it 3-0 and the Glens were ahead in the tie for the first time. However, a late equaliser gave them no time to respond again and sadly, there was no extra time, it went to penalties which the Glens lost. However, this team can be very proud of the effort they gave and now focus turns to this Wednesday when they return to league action away to St Anthony’s.

The seniors were away to old foes St Fergal’s on Sunday and richly deserved their 2-0 win. Mukoro Gberevbre gave them a first half lead which could have been doubled as Simon Doyle was pulled to the ground but frantic appeals for a penalty were waived away. However, in the second half the glens still managed to create the bulk of the chances and were rewarded when Josh O’Callaghan forced the ball over the line to make it 2-0. The whole team were excellent with Seán Holly and Sam Callaghan superb in defence, Mick Rooney and Ben Callaghan Trojans’ in the midfield and Mukoro Gberevbre a constant treat up front.
