Trees vandalised

April, 1998

-

IT MUST be supremely ironic that on the anniversary of the Easer Rising , vandals in Rathdrum delivered a blow to the memory of some of Ireland’s heroes.

The local Development Association, to mark the 20th anniversary of 1798, planted 98 trees around the village on Monday of last week.

Sixty of them were planted in an area on the Fair Green, where a Garden of Remembrance is to be created.

On Easter Sunday night, however, vandals snapped seven trees planted at Gilbert’s Row, just six days after they were planted.

‘We were very disappointed to put it mildly,’ said Jimmy Olohan, RDA Chairman.

The Gardai are following a definite line of enquiry and are optimistic that those responsible will be caught.
