On Thursday and Friday, April 6 and 7, the 21 students from the Leaving Cert Spanish class did their Oral exam. Everybody prepared very well and approached the exam with confidence and a great attitude. Well done all.

MUSIC PRACTICALS

Over the last two weeks Leaving Cert and Junior Cert students have performed in their Music Practical Exams. At LC this is worth 50% of their final grade, and at JC it is worth 25%. Students perform in a variety of ways from instrumental to vocal. They pick their own songs which display a variety of styles and genres. All the students that performed worked so hard over the last two years and did a fantastic job.

HOME ECONOMICS PRACTICALS

The Home Economics kitchen was busy last Friday as students showed the examiner their level of skill and attention to detail in both their culinary and craft work. Each student had to prepare, cook and serve two dishes in one and a half hours. It provides an opportunity for students to develop and show off their cooking and menu planning skills and is worth 50% of their overall Home Economics grade. Well done to all.

FRENCH NEWS

Two teachers from Lycée Saint Pierre, La Réunion, visited East Glendalough School on Wednesday, March 29, and Monday, April 3, They came to observe the Irish Education System as part of their Erasmus Plus trip.

U15 GIRLS SOCCER

Hard luck to our under-15 girls soccer team who were beaten by Loreto Bray in their Leinster Shield last 16 game. Rhiannon Wynne O’Sullivan scored a brilliant hattrick on the day but unfortunately this wasn’t enough. Other players who shone were Holly Jenkinson, Roisin Mangan, Rachel Waldron and captain Zoe Armstrong.

GIRLS GAA BLITZ

Our senior girls GAA team competed in a County B blitz in Ballinakill on Monday, April 3. Our first match was against our neighbours CCM. We managed to secure a win after a very keenly contested game. Our second match was against St Mary’s. We went into this match as underdogs but all the girls contributed to a fine team performance which saw us win by five points in the end. We then played Blessington CC in the final. Another fantastic first half performance saw us lead by a point at half time against a strong wind. Unfortunately we tired in the second half and Blessington scored three late goals to secure victory.

EGS TRACK AND FIELD

Wicklow Schools Track and Field took place in Greystones on April 4. Our medalists included; Derek Crammond – gold in 800m final, Vicki Elmes Kinlan – gold in 800m final and Ruth Evans – silver in high jump.

Well done to all the other athletes competing who had very good races: Abby Horner, Aimee Smith, Rhiannon Wynne O’Sullivan, Jill Canning, Maria Lorita, Roisin Mangan, Adam Shephard, Faye Dunne, Hannah Carton, Charlie Pearse, Harry Broxson, Niki Moelders, Edward Stephenson, Mark Sheane, Cian Hall, Cathal Keegan and Adam Woods.

A special well done to Harry Broxson in first year who competed in his own age category for the 100m sprint but also stepped up to mark and ran with Cathal Keegan, Adam Woods and Cian Hall in the boys under-20 relay team helping them place fourth overall. Well done to all.

TY HERITAGE MODULE

It was a productive week for the TY Heritage Module, who hosted a small food market in room one with some traditional and not so traditionally Irish food.

The pupils took on the brief which was to bake a traditional Irish food and to research the history of its origin. There were a lot of granny’s recipes which made for some very tasty treats and the lucky teachers who sampled the goods and enjoyed the brief historical backgrounds gave very positive feedback.

There were a host of foods from Jack Dempsey and Jacob Moody’s soda bread to Luke Hayden and Alan Flood’s sausage and stuffing treats. Mel Clarke baked a delicious bread and butter pudding while Rebecca Hastie was very adventurous with her seaweed bread. Grace Marshall and Eva Dreyer baked an old classic... the boxty.

Ellen Patterson, Gwen Collins, Amber Johnson and Sophie Van Maanen did very well in retelling the history of their chosen bakes, hot cross buns and shortbread (while this is a Scottish treat with recognise our Celtic ties.) Donovan Weiss Webb’s bairín brack was heavily researched.

Well done to everyone concerned and their distinctions have been well earned.

BLOOD BROTHERS

On the evening of April 6 the Fourth year class of East Glendalough School attended Blood Brothers in the Bord Gáis Energy theatre in Dublin. The play was received well from all the students who all particularly enjoyed the unique style of the performance, where a narrator would walk into the middle of scenes giving unique insights on the play.

60 students went and all followed a formal dress code. We wore suits and dresses and our etiquette was outstanding. We were praised on our behaviour during the musical which entailed the story of two best friends who find out they are twins. The music and choreography was fantastic. The role of Ms Johnston was portrayed by Rebecca Storm fantastically as well as the two brothers. Overall the play was outstanding and the whole class would recommend it.
